Each cake is made from all edible materials. As you scroll through the Photo Gallery, you'll see:
EYES MADE FROM ISOMALT- "sugar" from a beet. Beets are actually sugarless but sweet, and using isomalt, you can create any glass-like effect, which also makes for some pretty cool eyes when melted down to a certain temperature, poured into a half-spherical silicone mold, allowed to cool, torching the bubbles out (the fun part), and then painted.
FEATHERS MADE FROM WAFER PAPER- which when wet, melts. So when layered fragilely, using a touch of water as adhesive, cut and painted, you can create beautiful feathers, flowers or fabric-like materials, using water/steam to manipulate the edible paper to the curvature you'd like.
HAIR MADE FROM THAI RICE NOODLES- makes for some funky cool hair and perfect white whiskers.
OTHER FEATURES are sculpted from rice crispy treats, chocolate, modeling chocolate, and fondant. All hand-painted or airbrushed to complete the design.
THE STRUCTURE supports the cake and is engineered from wood, threaded rods, and/or pvc pipes. The cake board is made from wood that is cut using a jigsaw in the shape of whatever is being sculpted. From there, holes are drilled into the cake board to thread the threaded rod into place. Each threaded rod is cut to the perfect height needed. This rod supports the cake, and is ran from the base of the cake stand through the cake board and held in place with nuts, washers, and locking washers. Depending on the design, pvc can also be used. Pipe flange is drilled into the cake stand, and the pipe is cut and "glued" in place. Sometimes the pipe is torched and bent to get the right angle needed for the design. The perfect support allows the cake to remain nice and solid, especially during transit. These cakes can get pretty heavy. The tiger cake- "Love Has No Bounds" featured in the video below weighed 81 lbs, so the structure is the most important piece of the cake building puzzle, and can sometimes take an entire day to design and build!
